Frequently Asked Questions

Ready to get started?

Please carefully review the Frequently Asked Questions for each section below.

  • What is Rifles and Reels?
Rifles and Reels Game & Fish is a club that promotes the shooting sports of archery, pistols, rifles and shotguns. For more information on our different ranges, please click on the Ranges page.
  • How does Rifles and Reels operate?
Rifles and Reels has been in operation since 1968 and is located in Garson, Ontario at 950 Goodwill Drive. We are a self-sufficient and a volunteer run club that relies on membership fees for our income and the work of members who can volunteer their time, labour and efforts to maintain, improve and upgrade the club as time and money allows. Although the club does pay contractors for certain services, a lot of the maintenance, clean-up work, and small projects would not be possible without the help of dedicated members volunteering to help.
  • What are Rifles and Reels operating hours?
Rifles and Reels is open to its members 365 days a year and can be used daily between the hours of 1/2hr before sunrise and 1/2hr after sunset.
  • Is this Club Open to the Public? Can I rent a firearm with some friends to have a shooting experience?
Rifles and Reels is a members-only range. This club is not open to the general public. The only people who are granted access to this facility are members and their guests who own their own firearms. Rifles and Reels is not a business and as such, does not have any firearms that they are able to “rent” to anyone. Although there may be such clubs in Ontario, I am not aware of any such facility in Sudbury or Northern Ontario. However, if you do know a member of the club, you can ask to come to the range with them as a guest and use their firearms. They will be responsible for teaching you the rules and making sure you abide by them.
  • How do I get my PAL/RPAL in the Sudbury area?
A Canadian Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) can be obtained through our freinds at JOST Training Services or Sudbury Firearms and Hunter Education.
  • Do you offer lessons for any shooting sports?
Although we do not have a specific Lesson program on site, each range has a director that is knowledgeable and has many years of experience in their respective disciplines. If you would like some pointers in a certain discipline, please send an email and we will do our best to make arrangements.
  • I went to the member’s only section on the website, but its password protected, how do I get in?
The password is the gate code for the current year.
  • When does the gate code change from year to year?
The gate codes change yearly on February 1st.
  • How do I find the dates for events/meetings at the club?
Event and meeting dates are shared by email. They can also be found on the website calendar here.
  • I would like to help out at the club or I have some ideas I’d like to share, who do I get in touch with?
You have a few options. You can contact any member of the Executive directly, attend a general meeting or contact the club through the website or Facebook.
  • I am not receiving emails from the club, what do I do?
Visit the website www.riflesandreels.ca/members-only and sign up for emails in the member’s only section. Alternatively, you can also send an email to rifles.reels@gmail.com This email address stays with the Secretary position from year to year. If you have signed up and still aren’t receiving emails, check your spam/junk folder.
  • Can I bring a guest with me to the range once I am a member?
Yes, you may bring up to 3 guests at one time, but they are your responsibility and members have priority over all guests. Each guest must pay $5 and fill out the guest form every time they visit the range. Guests must also wear a guest ID badge which can be found next to the guest fee drop box. First year members are permitted to bring guests to the club but need to confirm by sending an email to rifles.reels@gmail.com before doing so.
  • How can I become a member?
You can visit our MEMBERSHIP page to sign up now. The first part of the page has the descriptions of the different membership tiers. The “New Member” button will take you to the form you need to fill out with the 6 step process. Once you’ve filled it out, you will be contacted to arrange for an orientation time and other details. The easiest method of payment is by Email Money Transfer, but we also accept cash or cheque. Sorry, we don’t accept credit or debit cards for payment.
  • What is expected of me once I become a member?
Members are expected to use the facility in accordance with the laws and regulations of Canada and Ontario as well as our own club rules. Members are expected to treat the facility as if it were their own property and not engage in any manner of disrespectful or destructive behaviour, such as damaging club property (i.e. shooting at target frames). Members who cannot abide by these simple rules will have their membership revoked. Clean up after yourself. The club does not have any kind of dedicated cleaning staff. Members are expected to clean up their own shall casings and garbage. Although it is not required, if you are able to, volunteering to help with projects, maintenance or clean-ups is a great way to meet new people and to save the club money by not having to hire contractors. We have a limited budget every year and the more work we do ourselves, the more maintenance and upgrade projects we can afford.
  • Does Rifle & Reels prorate membership fees?
New members joining in the fall can take advantage of the one time pro-rated offer, where you pay $60 for the remainder of the calendar year (Oct-Dec) and purchase the regular membership for the following year. For example, a senior would pay $60 for Oct-Dec and then $120 for the following year for a total of $180.
  • Why Don't you offer Pro-Rating memberships?
As mentioned earlier, Rifles and Reels is a volunteer run club. All of the work that goes into maintaining the webpage, creating membership cards, setting up and doing orientations for new members, putting on courses for existing members (i.e. the holster course), etc, etc is all done by volunteers. This alone takes many, many hours for several people to stay on top of. Offering pro-rated memberships in the fall already adds a significant amount of work and doing it throughout the whole year would make it even more difficult. Compare our membership fees ($200 per person at most) to the membership fees of gun ranges in southern Ontario which can run into the thousands of dollars a year and it is easy to see that we have a great club at a very reasonable price.
  • I have a PDF copy of my membership renewal from a previous year, can I just change the date and resubmit it?
No, the club is no longer accepting paper/PDF applications/renewals. Each applying or renewing member must complete the form on the website here.
  • What do the different coloured stickers on our membership badges mean?
⭐ 400 Range Precision 🟡 New Member 🟢 Standard Member 🔴 Holster Qualified
  • What are your methods of payment?
Methods of Payment accepted are Email Money Transfer or Cheque. Sorry, no cash, Debit or credit cards.
  • What are the range numbers?
Trap Range 400 Yard Rifle Range Action Range 100 Yard Range 25/50 Yard Range 200 Yard Range *Archery Range (not an official firearms range so it does not have a number)
  • Can I walk around the property with my pistol in a holster?
No, holstered pistols are only allowed on range #3.
  • One of the garbage cans is full, what do I do?
Remove the full bag and place in the dumpster. There will either be a new bag at the bottom of the can, or a fresh one can be found near the sign in book.
  • I am cold and there is no firewood in the shooting shack, what do I do?
Remove the piece of plexiglass from the wood chute and send some wood down to the shack. Wood can be stacked underneath the table directly below the chute. You are now ready to start a fire.
  • There is something broken on the range, what do I do?
Fix it yourself or you can inform any member of the Executive. Their contact info is on the website in the member’s only section or send an email to rifles.reels@gmail.com.
  • Is it okay to shoot shot at paper target stands with my shotgun?
NO. Only slugs are to be used on paper targets at the 25/50/100 and 200 yard shooting positions.
  • It is perfectly legal for me to have an unboxed non-restricted firearm in my vehicle. Do I need to have it boxed or covered when entering the range?
Yes, you must have your firearms covered on all 6 sides when entering the range. Boxes/gun socks are the most appropriate ways to cover your firearms.
  • How do I hang paper targets on the action range?
Place 2 – 1x2s in the mobile targets stands and staple a piece of cardboard between them. Now, if you want, you can staple a paper target to the cardboard or just shoot the cardboard. Please put the target stands back in the storage area once you are finished.
  • What type of ammunition is allowed on each range?
Please read the rules that are posted on each range or you can ask a member of the Executive.
  • I have steel targets of my own, may I use them at the range?
Need to be shrouded on range 4 or 5. See rules for range #3 for details regarding shrouding.
  • I have a pistol with a holster, but I have not received the club level holster training, can I still use the holster for storage only?
    No.
  • I have my Black Badge training from IPSC Ontario, is this an equivalent to the club level holster training?
Yes, if you have your Black Badge, the club level course is not required. Simply email rifles.reels@gmail.com with a copy of your black badge and arrangements will be made to get your red sticker on your membership card.
  • I would like to use the Action Range (#3) but there are some actions shooters practicing for a match, where can I shoot?
If you are holster certified you can ask if you can join them. If you are not holster certified, you can still use range #5. The Action Range is for action shooters thus they are given priority. Static shooting is to be done on range #5 unless the Action Range is empty.
  • I have seen members shooting steel on the Action Range, how do I gain access?
Take the holster certification course and then shoot a few matches with the action shooters. Once you have learned how to properly setup and shoot the steel targets you will be given access to the sea can.
  • There is a lot of snow on some of the paths around the property, how do I get through it?
    Shovel it.
  • I have come across a mess on the range or I have created one myself, what do I do?
Clean it up. Do not leave a mess for someone else to clean up.
  • I have found someone’s gear or ammo on the range, what do I do?
The best thing to do is nothing. Chances are that the person that left it behind will be back for it. If it needs to be moved, put it somewhere out of the weather where that person can find it. If it’s something that you feel shouldn’t be left at the range, contact rifles.reels@gmail.com.
  • I have lost an item and cannot find it, what do I do?
Post a note near the sign in book describing the item with your contact info. You can also send an email to rifles.reels@gmail.com to see if anyone has turned it in.
  • I am all done shooting for the day and I have a bunch of shot up cardboard, where do I put it?
Put it in the burn barrel and burn it.
  • I have seen someone doing something unsafe or destroying club property, what should I do?
If someone is being unsafe, your first course of action should be to address it with that person immediately. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Your second course of action should be to inform a member of the Executive. Incident report sheets can be found next to the sign in book. Be helpful, not confrontational.
  • Where should my muzzle be pointed (LOADED firearm)?
Downrange. If your muzzle is pointed in any other direction, you are handling your firearm in an unsafe manner.
  • Where should my muzzle be pointed (UNLOADED firearm)?
    1. Downrange 2. Vertical, pointed at the sky (high carry) 3. At a berm while at/on the safety table If your muzzle is pointed in any direction other than the 3 listed above, you are handling your firearm in an unsafe manor.
  • Where can I unbox/keep unboxed (unloaded) long guns on the range?
The only acceptable places to unbox/store unboxed (unloaded) long guns are: On the firing line with the muzzle pointing downrange On a table labeled “Safe Area” or “Safety Table” with the muzzle pointed towards the berm behind the table In a rifle rack with the muzzle pointed up For each of the scenarios listed, the long guns shall be unloaded, magazine out, action open with an ECI in place. Please note that benches behind the firing line on the main range (Range #5) and picnic tables or other table behind the firing line on Range #3 are NOT safe areas.
  • Where can I unbox/keep unboxed pistols (unloaded) on the range?
The only acceptable places to unbox/store unboxed (unloaded) pistols are: 1. On the firing line with the muzzle pointing downrange 2. On a table labeled “Safe Area” or “Safety Table” with the muzzle pointed towards the berm behind the table 3. In a holster (holster certification through the club required) For scenario #1 & #2, the pistols shall be unloaded, magazine out, action open with an ECI in place. Please note that benches behind the firing line on the main range (Ranges #3 and #4) and picnic tables or other table behind the firing line on Range #2 are NOT safe areas.
  • What is an ECI and why do I need to use it?
An ECI (empty chamber indicator) is a device that members shall insert into the chamber of the firearms when they are unboxed and not in use. They are available at most retailers or can be fashioned from trimmer line which the club continually provides for the membership. Their purpose is to clearly demonstrate that the chamber of a firearms is indeed empty.
  • I am not sure how to operate one of my firearms, can I ask someone for help?
Absolutely. You can contact any member of the Executive to ask for help.
  • How far away do I need to be from steel to shoot it?
10 meters for pistol and 50 meters for rifle.
  • I have 2 firearms in my gun case, but the muzzles are all pointed in different directions, how do I unbox them?
All your muzzles should be pointed in the same direction when you unbox them. If, for example, you have 2 rifles, with the muzzles at 180 deg from each other, unbox the rifle with the muzzle pointing down range. Once you have finished unboxing that firearm, turn the case around so that the other rifle is now pointing down range and unbox it.
